Research at the TU in Delft has shown that plants contribute to sound absorption. The sound absorption of materials in a room determine the reverberation time. The more sound absorption is present, the shorter the reverberation time. The result has shown that plants can be used to switch off echo in commercial buildings. In addition to having an active function, it naturally also looks very attractive!
Large plants with large leaves dampen the sound the best and are therefore good acoustic plants. There is even a research that has shown that green walls absorb sound better than standard acoustic material!
Now it is of course that you have to use a lot of plants if you want to create the same effect with specially developed acoustic material. That is why there are, for example, also creative solutions by choosing an acoustic planter made of felt with the plants in it, a double effect! A material can also be attached behind the plants that absorbs the sound for the most part. This way, the space does not have to be completely filled with plants!
There is scientific research that shows convincingly that plants in the workplace and in central locations in buildings do much more for people and buildings than just enhance the atmosphere. Plants make a significant contribution to healthier employees and a cleaner working environment.
Plants appear to do a lot for our overall sense of well-being. They purify the air, produce oxygen and dampen noise. Of course, if plants do all that, they should also increase performance while working in the office. And they do, several researches have been conducted and all results are positive in terms of increasing work performance!
